Back on the Bike!

Rhys Blyth Monday, October 8, 2018 Blog

Last year’s Simpson Desert Bike Challenge champion, our very own Eckart Altenkamp, was back on the bike for the 2018 edition.

This year, Eckart came in at a very commendable second place, however, he did so against participants from the Australian Army!

The Simpson Desert Bike Challenge is a 5-day event covering 550kms, stretching from Purni Bore, South Australia all the way to the iconic Birdsville Hotel in Queensland. Riding on fat bikes, competitors cover approximately 600kms, traversing some 700 sand dunes, cross salt lakes and vast gibber plains in an incredible feat of endurance, grit and determination.

Here’s what our Finance Practice Lead, but more importantly, Desert Champ had to say on this year’s event.

“2018 was incredibly tough. I’m stoked to come 2nd out of 21 riders. Especially rewarding to leave behind many much younger riders, including all of the 5 riders from the Australian Army! The stunning desert location, the camaraderie amongst riders and the spirit of this unique event will make me come back, no doubt. One of my sons wants to ride, too – so, next year may see me in a support role? Saves me 300 hours of training!”

Eckart toiled across the Australian outback to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. If you would like to donate to this amazing cause you can access our champions page here.
